The dark branches and red sky created a terrifying scene, reminiscent of a horror film, exuding a strong sense of foreboding.
Suddenly, urgent knocking echoed from outside the room, causing the entire space to tremble.
“Help! Please come quickly!”
Jiang Hua pressed down on Tong Sui, who was about to get up, and stepped forward to open the door.
A man covered in mud and water rushed in in a panic.
Jiang Hua sidestepped to avoid him.
The man stumbled, nearly falling; he was one of the base’s administrators from earlier that morning.
Jiang Hua coldly asked, “What’s the matter?”
“The rain has washed the wall away!” the man exclaimed frantically. “We sent people to make emergency repairs, but many zombies emerged from below the ground and dragged our people in!”
All the ability users in their base were utterly useless; faced with such a mutation, they were all paralyzed with fear.
In the blink of an eye, nearly everyone had fallen, and the ground was soaked with blood.
“I barely managed to escape,” the man pleaded. “For the sake of the innocent people still in the base, please help us.”
Hearing the commotion, the other team members stepped out. “Hua, what happened?”
Jiang Hua’s expression darkened slightly. “We have an emergency task.”
“Yes!”
All the team members quickly returned to their dormitories to gear up in their armor.
Jiang Hua turned to Tong Sui, “It’s pouring outside, so you shouldn’t come along.”
“I want to go too,” Tong Sui insisted. “You said that day that it’s safest to be next to you.”
At that moment, the muddy man suddenly clutched his neck.
Thick black blood oozed from his throat.
Greenish veins surfaced on his skin, and a white film covered his eyes as he twisted and emitted a strange cry.
The mutation occurred in an instant.
He lunged toward Tong Sui in the room, mouth open, but hadn’t even reached his clothes.
There was a sharp sound as Jiang Hua’s dagger thrust at a tricky angle into the back of his head. He yanked it back forcefully, and thick green liquid splattered everywhere.
The man collapsed, twitched briefly, and then lay still.
Jiang Hua withdrew his gaze. “Stay close to me.”
“Okay!” Tong Sui replied.
All the team members dashed outside into the rain.
Trained as they were, they hopped into the off-road vehicle, speeding toward the collapsed wall.
Jiang Hua pulled out two handguns, loaded them, handed one to Tong Sui, and secured the other to his leg.
He instructed, “You don’t need to attack; just protect yourself.”
Tong Sui nodded.
The off-road vehicle stopped some distance from the wall, and Wang Tao reported, “Hua, the road ahead is impassable.”
Around the collapsed wall, the ground was soaked with blood, which had seeped into the dirt, glowing bright red even under the downpour.
Jiang Hua ordered, “Get out.”
“Yes.”
The team members swiftly jumped out of the vehicle.
Tong Sui grasped the handgun and followed Jiang Hua out.
The torrential rain drastically reduced visibility, and the cold moisture penetrated deep into his bones, making him feel as if he were submerged in icy water, dulling his reactions and senses.
A massive horde of zombies surged in from beyond the collapsed wall.
A few ordinary people huddled together. “Help us!”
“Ahhhh!!!”
A series of bright lightning bolts struck, instantly reducing the nearby zombies to ashes.
Flashes of light broke through the red sky, creating a wide net of electricity, illuminating the area and causing a large number of zombies to fall.
The onlookers were stunned.
Jiang Hua grabbed one of the people and shouted, “Run!”
Recovering from their shock, the others stumbled forward.
At that moment, the muddy water suddenly stirred.
A green hand reached out, grabbing the last person in line.
Tong Sui raised his handgun and fired swiftly.
Thick green liquid erupted, causing the muddy water to churn even more violently, dispersing into multiple points.
At the same time, several zombies emerged from the ground.
Tong Sui drew the other handgun strapped to his leg and fired again.
The bullet pierced through a zombie’s head.
The zombie collapsed into the mud, spraying droplets that splattered onto his clothes.
“Your shooting skills are incredible,” Zhang Binyu remarked as he joined in, “I’m starting to doubt if you’re really a researcher.”
As he spoke, he froze the water, piercing through another zombie’s head.
The zombies’ bodies already piled up like a small mountain.
Earth-type ability users were working hard to repair the other side of the collapsed wall.
Suddenly, a rustling noise sounded from behind.
Tong Sui turned his head.
The crops in the fields had gone wild, with vines sprouting thorns, ensnaring a nearby ordinary person.
The thorns pierced his temple.
The bloodied vines twitched as if electrocuted, excitedly lunging toward Tong Sui.
Tong Sui raised his gun, firing several shots at it.
The vines, stung by intense pain, slowed down slightly, but in a fit of rage, they sprouted several branches, attempting to constrict Tong Sui.
Tong Sui’s wrist was yanked back.
Jiang Hua stepped in front of him. A blinding current severed the vines and their roots into charred remains.
The air was thick with the smell of blood and the stench of burnt flesh.
Jiang Hua staggered slightly.
Frequent use of his abilities had drained most of his energy.
Tong Sui felt the hand gripping him turn icy.
“Hua?”
Jiang Hua replied, “I’m fine.”
“Cough, cough.”
The pushed-back zombies broke through the gap ahead once again.
The strong smell of blood had drawn all the nearby zombies in.
In the distance, a mass of zombies piled densely together, almost endless under the misty rain.
